Summit Point, WV – Aaron Telitz and Paul Alspach made it an all WISKO Racing Mygale/Honda front row during qualifying for the F1600 Formula F Championship Series at Summit Point. A full rain day dealt drivers and teams a challenge for the opening weekend of the season finale for the Series. Schedule changes due to the weather system led to a late afternoon qualifying session on a drying race track that produced lap after lap of quicker times for F1600 drivers.
For Telitz, the Championship contender takes three bonus points for pole and hopes to make up ground from third place in the points. The 21-year-old was recently named a finalist in the Team USA Scholarship shootout and hopes to build upon his sole victory of the season that came with a daring last lap pass on two cars at Road Atlanta in May.
Telitz’s WISKO teammate Alspach placed his No. 66 Mygale/Honda on the outside of the front row, his best qualifying effort since starting second at Lime Rock Park earlier in the season.
Row two features the top two locked in the Championship battle, with Jake Eidson in the No. 10 Spectrum/Honda for Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing, and the No. 98 Bryan Herta Autosport Mygale/Honda of Adrian Starrantino.
Both Eidson and Starrantino will face off along with Telitz in the upcoming Team USA shootout.
For Eidson, a Championship clinch will come by bringing his Spectrum home in one piece, and rival Starrantino needs to go to the front and maximize whatever points he can grab this weekend.
While Raceworks teammates Jim Goughary and Franklin Futrelle led most of the session at an impressive pace, with each lap getting faster, their Van Diemen/Hondas couldn’t hold up as the track got even quicker – with Goughary settling for fifth and Futrelle pulling in early, but still qualifying sixth.
Combined practice times during the day were led with a morning flyer from Futrelle, in the black and green No. 9 entry. The professional driving coach has not run in the Series since contesting the season opener at VIR.
Joe Parsons, Steve Bamford, Ayla Agren and Art Foster rounded out the top ten in race one qualifying.
The day was originally set to have five practice sessions and qualifying sessions for both races, but weather led to a change that had Series officials schedule one qualifying session for race one. The second race, on Sunday, will have its grid set based on the fastest laps in race one, round 11 of the 2013 season, taking place on Saturday.
The finale weekend at Summit Point continues with rounds 11 and 12, the final two races of the 2013 F1600 season, with an 11:00am local time green flag scheduled for both Saturday and Sunday.
