Dobbie Resets Lap Record on the Way to Pole for Race Two!

August 4, 2019

Andrew Dobbie broke the qualifying lap record in his march to pole position for race two here at PIRC!

For the second round of qualifying, the conditions were cool and hospitable. This, the third day of racing activities, the track is in prime condition. The conditions were perhaps a tad too cool early in the session, it wasn’t until the ten minute mark that the drivers started running times similar to the previous day. Andrew Dobbie, yesterday’s race winner, was the first to start running the times we would expect. He got into the low 1:40’s, and that was good enough to make him the fastest driver for the time being. Harry Voigt sat in second, less than a tenth of a second behind, doing a good job in the Van Diemen. Brandon Dixon is third, but he’s not run many laps, he visited the pits early but started a major push mid-session. Nick Palacio is fourth and consistently lowering his times, Kerry Jacobsen sits fifth.

With fourteen minutes remaining, Dixon is now improving. He’s registered a 1:40.3, this puts him in within two tenths off Dobbie. Meanwhile, Dobbie who had stopped for some changes returned to the racing surface. Dixon completes another lap, it’s a flier! He’s gone to first and broken the qualifying lap record! It’s a 1:39.66, that’s two tenths under the old record. Dobbie comes by, he betters his time, he’s just one tenth off Dixon!

There's less than ten minutes left in qualifying now, Harry Voigt improves marginally, it’s not enough to endanger Dixon or Dobbie though. In the waning minutes, nobody improves, except for Dobbie that is. On his last flying lap, he goes to pole! He's further lowered the lap record! It's a 1:39.488!
